JOÃO MOTA DA COSTA – 4th of May 1954

Medical Doctor, specialist in reconstructive and plastic surgery, dedicated to hand surgery. Coordinator of hand and wrist surgery at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Center located at the Hospital CUF Descobertas, Lisbon – Portugal.

Photography was an early found interest. I have been taking photos from 13 years of age whilst on family outings or on vacation with friends. Using a Voighlander (still in my possession as a relic) followed by Olympus OM, Nikon ….. to the Leica M6 which still possess and has added a M9.

Recently purchased a Mamya 6 and 7, a Wista 4×5 expressing a renew interest for analogic photography. Self-taught, trying to learn from the great masters of photography through books and exhibitions.

My time was not only devoted to photography, as I wished it could have been and my dedication to being a surgeon required a lot of time to keep up with the evolution of medicine causing a gap in my photography from 1992 to 2010.

A year and a half ago I opted to reduce my medical time to have more availability for photography which led to the reorganization of several photographic projects of which the first was the 1st solo exhibition with the title “abstractions”.
